Hochschulen und Universitäten gibt es in Berlin wie Sand am Meer, so dass das Herz eines jeden zukünftigen Studenten höher schlägt. Und von der Auswahl wird man dann erschlagen! Je nach Studienwunsch und konkreten Vorstellungen hat man die Qual der Wahl, doch mit einem Angebot von über 1000 Studiengängen findet in dieser Stadt wohl jeder etwas für sich. Egal ob Ingenieur oder Künstler, Bachelor oder Master, Deutscher oder nicht, Hochschule oder Universität, staatlich oder privat – dir werden keine Grenzen gesetzt. Das Angebot ist so breit gefächert, dass man förmlich untergehen würde, wenn man sich durch alle Informationen wühlen wollte.

Doch lasst euch nicht abschrecken! Es hat immerhin einen Grund, dass mehr als 160 000 Studenten in Berlin angesiedelt sind und die Zahl stetig steigt.

International ist Berlin als Studienplatz sehr beliebt und etwa 15% der Studierenden kommen aus dem Ausland. Auch das Angebot an internationalen Studiengängen kommt nicht zu kurz und so hat man auch hier einiges an Auswahl. Universitäten erkennen internationale Abschlüsse an und oft muss man nur einen Nachweis der Deutschkenntnisse liefern.

Berlins Universitäten gehören teilweise zu den besten Deutschlands. Schauen wir zwei davon etwas näher an.

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Gegründet wurde die Universität im Jahre 1809 durch Wilhelm von Humboldt, der eine Universität beruhend auf die Einheit der Lehre und Forschung, der Freiheit der Wissenschaft und der allseitigen Bildung des Studenten schaffen wollte. Mit ihr entstand eine neue Ära von Universität und Wissenschaft. Demnach ist die Humboldt-Universität (kurz: HU) heute die älteste Universität Berlins und gehört zu den bundesdeutschen Eliteuniversitäten.

Pro Jahr studieren mehr als 5.000 Menschen in 185 Studiengängen an der HU.

Die Uni legt großen Wert auf Diversität und hat sogar ein internationales Büro, dass sich um alle Dinge kümmert, die für Studenten aus anderen Ländern wichtig sind oder deutschen Studierenden einen Auslandsaufenthalt ermöglicht.

Der Campus ist auf drei Standorte verteil: Campus Mitte, Campus Nord und Campus Adlerhof. Dort befinden sich die Fakultäten der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften, Wirtschaftswissenschaften, die Theologie, die Lebenswissenschaften, die Mathematik und die Naturwissenschaften. Bekannt ist die HU vor allem für das Studium des Lehramtes.

Technische Universität Berlin

Sie entstand im Jahre 1879 durch Einsatz des Architekten Karl Friedrich Schinkel und des Ingenieurs Christian W. Beuth, als die Königliche Berliner Bauakademie und die Königliche Berliner Gewerbeakademie vereint wurde. Mit etwa 32.000 Studierenden und einer Auswahl an 90 Studiengängen ist die TU die größte staatliche Universität in Berlin.

Der Campus befindet sich in Berlin-Charlottenburg in der Straße des 17. Juni, ganz in der Nähe des Großen Tiergartens.

Auch die Technische Universität ist heute international hochgestellt mit circa 6000 ausländischen Studierenden und einer Auswahl an internationalen Masterstudiengängen.

Zwischen #Schadenfreude und #Weltschmerz – Deutsche #Wörter im Englischen

Jeder von uns kennt die deutschen Lehnwörter „kindergarden“ oder „#wanderlust“ im Englischen. Aber es gibt noch mehr ursprünglich deutsche Wörter im Englischen, genauso, wie es auch englische im Deutschen gibt. (C) Greg Raines

 

Lange Wörter, ein Hoch aufs Deutsche?

Wer kennt sie nicht, die unsinnigen #Buzzfeed Listen, die einzigartige Ausdrücke aus fremden Sprachen zusammenfassen, die so im Englischen nicht existieren. Ein besonders beliebter deutscher Kandidat jener Ach-hätten-wir-doch-Ausdrücke ist der Begriff „#Fernweh“.

Eine Überraschung stellen dagegen Wörter, wie „doppelgaenger“, „schadenfreude“ oder „poltergeist, dar, die sich, laut dem #Oxford #Dictionary, längst im englischen Wortschatz eingenistet haben. Anscheinend ist die Eigenart des Deutschen, lange Wörter wider Willen bilden zu können, beliebter als sich so manch ein Brite oder #Amerikaner eingestehen möchte.

Daneben sind schwermütig klingende Wörter wie „#Zeitgeist“ oder „Weltschmerz“ hoch geschätzt. Kein Wunder, immerhin sind deutsche Philosophen beliebte Forschungsobjekte an amerikanischen oder kanadischen Universitäten. Um Hegel, Kant, Arendt und Co lesen und verstehen zu können, pauken die dortigen Studenten sogar Deutsch. Aber nicht so wie wir Englisch lernen, zur Kommunikation, sondern wie wir Latein lernen, als reine Übersetzungssprache. Wenn die Studenten es dann nach #Deutschland oder #Österreich schaffen, reden sie lieber Englisch. Schade eigentlich.

Was soll das alles?

Aber ist es tatsächlich die Präzision des Deutschen, die einige in der Neuen Welt oder auf der Insel missen? Oder ist es ihre Länge, die deutsche Begriffe so attraktiv in amerikanischen Ohren klingen lassen? Vielleicht schmunzeln die meisten schlichtweg nur über den Klang einiger Ausdrücke, was die Beliebtheit solcher Wörter wie „kitsch“, „kaput“, „schnapps“ oder einem übertrieben lautem „#NEIN“ erklären würde. Ich wette mit dir, lieber Leser, dass sich deine Lippen zu einem Grinsen verziehen, sobald du diese Wörter mit einem amerikanischen Akzent aussprichst!

Wahrscheinlicher ist es, dass je nach Notwendigkeit oder Absicht eine Mischung aus all diesen Gründen zum Tragen kommt. Zum Beispiel gibt es bei dem Wörtchen „kitsch“ schlichtweg kein englisches Äquivalent. Bei einem Wort wie „schnapps“, im Duden besser unter „Schnaps“ bekannt, sieht es schon anders aus. Die englische Alternative lautet „liquor“. Dennoch neigen einige dazu, lieber „schnapps“ anstelle von „liquor“ zu sagen. Bei einem Kräuterschnaps wie #Jägermeister fühlen sich die meisten anscheinend wohler, das Gesöff „schnapps“ zu schimpfen.

#UnitedStates auf deutsch?

Ganz bestimmt aber versteckt sich der Grund für die Vorliebe der Amerikaner nicht in dem Ammenmärchen, dass Deutsch beinahe die Amtssprache der #USA geworden wäre. Denn eine Abstimmung über die künftige Amtssprache der Vereinigten Staaten kann, wie der #Yeti, ins Reich der Märchen verbannt werden. Zwar gab es einen Antrag die frisch verfassten Gesetzestexte der USA ins Deutsche zu übersetzen, um den deutschen Neuankömmlingen aus den deutschen Landen die #Integration zu erleichtern, doch den hat das Repräsentantenhaus 42 zu 41 abgelehnt.

Sie sind schon ein merkwürdiges Völkchen die #Migranten auf der anderen Seite des Teichs. Auch wenn es für uns manchmal schwer nachvollziehbar ist, warum ein Wörtchen wie „kaputt“ lustig sein soll, kann man ihnen doch einfach diesen Scherz erlauben, sie nehmen ihn sich sowieso.

#Confidence Is Key (www.berlin-training.eu)

Let’s face it; if you want to #succeed at anything, you need to have a certain level of confidence. This doesn’t mean that you need to boldly and #fearlessly attack every aspect of #life. There certainly may be areas where you lack confidence. You need to identify, however, the areas of life where you need to be confident in order to succeed. (C) Christian Sterk

 

The first thing you need to do is to identify where you need more confidence, and where you don’t. Let’s say, for example, that you are afraid of public #speaking, and you need to get over that to succeed. In this case, you need to gain confidence in speaking in front of people. If you lack confidence in cooking a good meal, that certainly won’t matter to your speaking ability. You need to identify where you need to gain confidence, and where lack of confidence doesn’t matter. This doesn’t mean that you can’t gain confidence in other areas, though.

One of the dangers of a lack of confidence is that it can fuel failure. Failure then leads to decreased confidence, which leads to failure, which leads to… well you can see it’s a vicious circle. Lack of confidence and failure feed on each other, and they will drag you down. So, the first key to gaining confidence is to succeed rather than fail.

Your first successes do not need to be major #successes. You just need to succeed at something to start #lifting #yourself up, and break out of the failure->lack of confidence cycle. Choose a small goal to achieve. This needs to be a goal that you cannot achieve at this #time, but it also needs to be #achievable with a little bit of #work. Set your mind on achieving this goal. Set yourself a realistic time #frame, and then determine what you need to in order to succeed.

Once you achieve this goal, you will start to see that you can succeed. Keep setting yourself #goals, and work towards achieving them. Success will #lead to confidence, which will lead to more success, and so on. Before long, you will be able to attack the critical areas where you lack confidence. If you fear public speaking, you can now start working on that lack of confidence. Find mentors to help you along. Find #groups and #organizations that will #help you to build confidence.

Do not confuse confidence with arrogance. Being confident is a #good thing, being #arrogant is a bad thing. Confidence is the idea that you can achieve something that you can succeed. Arrogance is the idea that you are better than others.

Confidence is the key to succeeding in any #aspect of life. Whether you want to succeed in #business, #creative endeavors, #fitness, #weight loss, or #family, you need to have confidence. Start by setting yourself small goals, and find small successes. Build on those successes and you will find yourself gaining confidence in all areas of your life. Once you have confidence and success, then you can start helping those who lack confidence themselves.

How To Reach Your Goals (www.berlin-training.eu)

Setting goals is easy enough, but the real challenge is reaching them. How can you #reach your goals?

The first step in reaching your goals is to overcome #fear of #failure. If we start out thinking negatively, we likely won’t get very far in our efforts to reach our goals. In fact, we may not even set goals in the first place. Fear of failure can sometimes prevent us from doing this. Negative #thoughts or past „failures“ may overwhelm us. But if we keep thinking back to past „failures“, were these really failures after all? Did you #learn something that you can now put into practice or avoid the next time?

The second stage is to #identify what goal you want to set. You can start by #brainstorming potential goals. Some possible goal ideas are: learn a foreign language, stop smoking, make more #friends, climb a dormant volcano or mountain, #travel out of the country, learn a traditional dance or to play a musical instrument, show gratitude every day, lose weight, eat #healthier, or spend more time with your #family. You are the one that knows what appeals to you and what doesn’t. Try to come up with 10 to 20 ideas for possible goals. You may find that some of these will be interrelated and can help you reach your bigger goals.

Next, analyze your list and ask yourself questions like: Which goal seems the most #exciting? Which one is the most #challenging? Which one will make me proudest of myself if I #achieve it? The best goals for you are the ones that mean the most to you. You might select goals that touch all aspects of your life. After analyzing your list, now #prioritize it. First, select a few short-term goals that you could reach in just a few days. Then choose some long-term goals that will take weeks or months to reach. Now number them in the order you would like to achieve them.

The third stage is the #planning one. Without a plan, you may as well give up. It helps to write everything down on paper. Start by listing your goal. Then set a reasonable #deadline by which time you hope to have accomplished your goal. Next, plan the steps involved in reaching the goal. Be sure to anticipate possible #obstacles and how you will work to overcome them. Finally, make a commitment to yourself by signing and dating the paper.

After doing this, get #busy! Try to think of something you can do each day that will bring you closer to your goal, no matter how small. Be sure to track your progress and celebrate each step accomplished along the way. If something goes wrong in your plan, adapt to the situation and reevaluate your goal if necessary. And finally, imagine yourself once you have finally accomplished your goal and the satisfaction you will feel.

Building Your #AffiliateMarketing Assets (www.berlin-training.eu)

One of the biggest mistakes made by affiliate marketers when they first set up is failing to recognise that they are actually starting a #business. If you look at it from another #perspective you are establishing a #marketing company and your #websites and affiliate links are your assets which you can build to be as big as you want, you are only limited by your #time and #imagination.
There are a few steps you can take which makes you stand out from the crowd and avoid the stamp of being a “newbie” or unprofessional.

Step 1: Websites and domains

It’s important to have your own domain(s) and website(s) for several reasons. One is that you have complete control over what you choose to #promote, and what #ads and #banners you want to put on your site. You can create an eye-catching #professional #layout or have someone do it for you if that is beyond the scope of your abilities.

Secondly you are able to have your own #personalized email and you appear far more professional when you have your own domain, as opposed to having freebie hosting without a decent or keyword enhanced name. An extra #benefit is that your website and domain are assets that can be sold down the track if you choose and if you have developed them properly. You can buy a domain for around $10 and monthly hosting can start as low as $6.00 per month, so it’s well worth the small #investment.

Step 2: List building

All marketers know you need to get #traffic to your website, to click on your banners and ads to make money, no clicks – no sales. But getting traffic can be #hard work. Even when you get visitors to your site you generally only have one shot at nailing their business. What you need to do is build up a #customer list so you can get repeat visitors. You can do this by creating a signup form on your website for your #newsletter or offering a free downloadable gift or service in return for your visitor subscribing to your list. Once you have established a list you can email your customers with your offers and promotions on an ongoing basis.

Don’t just contact your list when you are selling something, try and share useful #information or advice, try and build trust so your customers will know to value what you are offering them, and buy from you when you do have a promotion. It is generally accepted that your list has a value of $1 per customer, so again another asset to nurture and build.

Step 3: Traffic

The lifeblood of affiliate marketing is traffic, but not everyone can get on the front page of #Google so where else are you going to get traffic? Unless you want to pay for it and that can be very costly.

A few methods you can explore are: writing articles, press releases, posting in forums, commenting or guest posting on #blogs, offline #advertising, and classified ads.

You don’t have to do everything at once, start off with one, master it then move on to another. It’s important to test your results, check to see which #method is most #effective and keep doing that.

Having an affiliate marketing business is all about repeating systems that work, so just make sure you develop a system first, then rinse and repeating the methods that work for you.

Why Travel Makes People #Happy (www.berlin-training.eu)

Some people love to #travel and others not so much. I love most every aspect of it. I like planning a #trip, deciding on the #route, what I want to #see, where I want to #stay, the #flights, in fact the whole caboodle. Then there’s the actual trip which is exciting and when it is over, travel gives you (usually) wonderful #memories. What is there not to like? (C) Alex Wong

Planning is a great time as you get to choose where you want to go, how you are getting there, all aspects of your trip, including #hotel. Today there are so many ways you can get information about the place you have chosen for your trip. For example, say you want to plan a trip to Costa Rica as your neighbors went there last year and they loved it. Certainly you can pick their brains about their #experiences there.

Then you can do your own #research. Online is a great place to start as you can look at maps, visit #blogs about the place and start planning what you will do when you get there. There are flights to book. Is San Jose the right airport for you or would Liberia be a better choice? Check with different airlines or expedia.com for the best routes and what the #price differences are. Maybe you should do some research into all-inclusive deals or general #vacation deals that include hotel and flights.

If you decide you would rather plan your itinerary yourself, then you can spend more time planning your trip. Costa Rica is well known for its beauty and there is so much to do there. You could go on a trip through a rainforest. Maybe a yoga camp? How about #car rentals? You could then #simply go wherever you want each day and not plan much at all. You could start of in San Jose and spend a night or two there to get to know the city and then hire a car and travel north to Arenal where the rainforests are and the volcano. The area is also a renowned spa town. You can either plan ahead and book hotels or just pick a place to stay when you get there – something that is usually very doable.

You could go further north west until you get to the beautiful #Pacific coast where there are lovely small towns on the coast where you can enjoy water sports, go on a trip to see the whales or the turtles, or simply #relax on one of the #beautiful #beaches.

While #Spanish is the language of the country, it is not difficult to get by with just #English. Travelling by car, you could more or less see the whole country in about two weeks and have a great time. Another plus is that it is near the equator so the weather so the weather is usually beautiful all year round. The people are nice and friendly and the country itself is spectacular and so are the flowers and the birds – they even have monkeys.

After your trip, you can spend your time looking at your #photos and re-living the great time you had there. This is just one of the many reasons that travelling is wonderful.

Why I Love To #Travel (www.berlin-training.eu)

I just love to travel. I have been lucky in that I have been able to do a lot of it in the last few years. I have been able to go to 11 #countries and 30 #states. (C) Hernan Sanchez

When I was growing up we didn’t travel very much. We usually only went to see my Grandparents in Arizona. It wasn’t that my parents didn’t want to travel. I guess they just wanted to save #money so we did more #local #trips.

When I was 19 I got my first taste of traveling. I went to #Washington DC for the week with a friend of mine. We had such a #good time. We got to see almost everything. It was an amazing trip and I knew after I returned home that I loved to travel.
The next trip I went on was a trip to Canada when I was 21. I went with my boyfriend at the time. We went during the #wintertime so we got to check out some of the local winter sports. We were able to check out a dog sled race.

As soon as we got back from #Canada, I started saving for my next #vacation. I knew if I didn’t make it a #priority, I would spend my money on something else. I started making a list of all the #places I wanted to go.
My next trip was when I was 22. I was able to go to #Brazil for the week. I had a friend from college whose cousin lived over there. I was able to stay with her. I got to see so many #amazing things on that trip.

When I was 24 I was able to go to #Ireland for my #honeymoon. We got to stay there for eight days. It was a perfect trip. We were able to see a lot of the #countryside and talk with a lot of the local people.
When I was 26 my husband and I went on our first cruise. On this trip we were able to visit six different countries. We went to #Italy, #Greece, #Egypt, #Turkey, #Malta and #Spain. We got to see so many different countries and #cultures on that trip.

We are now saving for a trip to #Australia. We both have always wanted to go there. As it is rather expensive it is going to take a while to have the money to do it. It will be worth it. We are already making #plans about what we want to see while we are there.
We are hoping to be able to visit for three months. It all depends on how much time we can both get off work. We don’t plan on having any #children until after we go on that trip.

I love traveling because I love seeing other parts of the #world. I love to see how a different culture or part of the countries lives. Our world might seem big but it is really small when you think about it. I hope I continue to travel until I can no longer physically do so.

Wer sich wundert, warum die sonst verdreckten Kinderstiefel blitzblank geputzt vor der Tür stehen, hat wohl noch nicht von Sankt Nikolaus gehört. (C) Ben White

 

Darf ich vorstellen, Sankt Nikolaus

Im Gegensatz zum Weihnachtsmann hat der Heilige Nikolaus tatsächlich gelebt. Als #Abt kümmerte er sich in Kleinasien um die Sorgen der Menschen, bis auch er von der Christenverfolgung der Römer betroffen war. Aber nachdem Kaiser Konstantin das Christentum zur Staatsreligion erklärte, durfte er das Gefängnis verlassen und kümmerte sich wieder um die Bedürfnisse der Armen.

In griechisch und russisch orthodoxen Kirchen findet man ihn #heute auf vielen Ikonen. Lange bevor er im mittelalterlichen #Europa bekannt wurde, verehrten ihn schon die Bewohner Siziliens als Schutzpatron der Seefahrer, Kinder, Alten und #Reisenden.

#Apfel statt #Apple

Der echte Nikolaus war dafür berüchtigt, dass er kleine #Geschenke, wie Münzen, in den Schuhen der Menschen versteckte, um ihnen zu helfen. Einmal soll er sogar #Geldgeschenke in den Kamin einer verarmten #Familie geworfen haben, um deren Töchter vor der Prostitution zu bewahren.

Beim heutigen Nikolausfest befüllt der Nikolaus, oder die Eltern, die Schuhe von Kindern mit kleinen Gaben, wie Nüssen, Äpfeln oder #Schokolade. Aber nur, wenn sie brav ihre Schuhe geputzt haben. #Kinder, die schmutzige Schuhe am Abend vor dem #6. Dezember vor die Tür gestellt haben, erhalten in einigen Ecken #Deutschlands einen Holzblock. Aus diesem Grund putzen einige Knirpse am Vorabend eifrig ihre #Winterstiefel, in die besonders viel Süßes passt.

Der Brauch rund um das Nikolausfest variiert von Familie zu Familie. Während in einigen Familien der Nikolaus wie ein Geist quasi über Nacht die Stiefel füllt, erscheint er in anderen in Persona, manchmal in Begleitung von Knecht Ruprecht, der mit seiner Rute unartige Kinder bestraft. In #Österreich ist dieser grimmige Zeitgenosse an der Seite des Heiligen Nikolaus unter dem Namen #Krampus bekannt.

Das Nikolausfest ist geschenketechnisch ein #WarmUp für #Weihnachten, denn die richtige Bescherung gibt es in Deutschland und Österreich erst an Heilig Abend.

Achtung #Verwechslungsgefahr!

Da es zwei Männer mit buschigen weißen Rauschebärten gibt, kann der eine mit dem anderen schnell verwechselt werden. Aber nein, der Nikolaus ist nicht der Weihnachtsmann. Diese Verwechslungsgefahr ergibt sich für Familien, die auf christliche #Traditionen Wert legen nicht, denn bei ihnen bringt das Christkind die Geschenke. Dadurch ist das Familienfest stärker in den christlichen Traditionen verankert, weil die Geburt #Jesu Christi und nicht die Bescherung im Mittelpunkt steht. Was auch zum heiligen Nikolaus passt, schließlich ist dieser Heilige ein Teil der christlichen Mythologie.

#SinterKlaas ist nicht der Weihnachtsmann

Bei unseren #Nachbarn in Holland ist das Nikolausfest sogar wichtiger als Heiligabend hier in Deutschland. Sinter Klaas, holländisch für Nikolaus, genießt einen höheren Stellenwert als der Weihnachtsmann oder das Christkind. Auch sein #Alter #Ego Knecht Ruprecht treibt in den Niederlanden am sechsten Dezember sein Unwesen, nur heißt er dort #ZwartePiet.

Einige Kinder stellen neben ihre Schuhe auch Gaben für das #Pferd des Nikolaus vor die Tür, darunter eine Mohrrübe, etwas Heu und einen Eimer voller #Wasser.

#Deutsche Weihnachtsmärkte – Nichts ist #besser als das #Original

Wir Deutschen sind nicht die einzigen, die Weihnachtsmärkte #lieben. Auch im Ausland entdecken immer mehr ihren Zauber für sich. (C) Andrew Neel

 

Gewusel, Glühwein, Gebrannte Mandel

In der Luft liegt der Geruch von Gebrannten Mandeln, Lebkuchen oder Stollen und die Menschen tummeln sich zwischen den Buden. Eigentlich ist es doch #verrückt, bei der Kälte freiwillig draußen zu sein, aber mit einem Glühwein oder einem Punsch in den Händen wird einem gleich viel wärmer. Besonders die kleinen beschaulichen Weihnachtsmärkte aus der #Region #locken Besucher aus den Städten an. Dort können sie traditionelles Kunsthandwerk nicht nur kaufen, sondern gleich die letzten Herstellungsschritte bestaunen. Bei dem ein oder anderen Glasbläser oder Kerzenzieher lässt einen der Verdacht nicht los, dass es doch nichts anderes als Show ist, um Kundschaft anzulocken. Aber zu keiner #Zeit sitzt das #Geld lockerer als in der Vorweihnachtszeit, weshalb wir auch gerne das vierte Räuchermännchen oder den fünften Weihnachtsstern kaufen.

Christkindlmarkt meets the #USA

Im Ausland werden die #Christmasmarkets #madeinGermany immer beliebter und gehören zu kulturellen Touristenmagneten. Touristen aus Amerika oder #China strömen zu den bekanntesten Weihnachtsmärkten in deutschen Großstädten, wie #München, #Berlin oder #Hamburg.

Allerdings gibt es mittlerweile, ähnlich wie beim #Oktoberfest, im Dezember auch Kopien von ihnen in den USA oder Fernost. Die besseren Christkindlmarkt-Kopien importieren Nussknacker oder #Weihnachtspyramiden aus der deutschen Provinz, um die #Illusion zu perfektionieren.Wobei sie einen wahren Kenner nicht täuschen können, denn diesen Massenveranstaltungen wohnt nicht der Zauber eines geselligen Beisammenseins inne, den die Mehrheit der Deutschen hierzulande schätzt.

Schlussendlich ist nichts besser als das Original, weshalb wir in der Adventszeit lieber zu Hause bleiben.
